Even since I learned about the island of Roatan, located just off Honduras in the Caribbean, I’ve wanted to travel there. I don’t know that there’s anything that particularly sets it apart. Although it’s on the western edge of the Caribbean Sea, the island contains all of the same characteristics that draw visitors to its eastern counterparts. It even has a lively beach bar scene on its western tip, making that section of the island a favorite among tourists, especially when it comes to the daily sunsets.
Despite just being about a four hour flight from Chicago, Roatan still isn’t known to many American tourists. Even though it’s a regular stop for cruises in the western Caribbean, you can still find empty beaches and plenty of space to stretch out and claim as your own.
One of these days I’ll get to Roatan. Until then, I’ll have to keep scanning through the following images to hold me over.
Have you been to Roatan? If so, let me know what you thought about it in the comments. Also, if you have any recommendations on places to stay (easy access to beach bars is an obvious must), I would love to hear about them.
