Candy Canes and Cocktails – The Festive White Russian

Tagged: , , , ,

I don’t know what it is about the Christmas season but it always brings about a craving for White Russians. And when I say “White Russian,” I don’t mean the kind that subliminally influenced me to write this article. I mean the cocktail. You know, the one that found a permanent spot in pop culture lore via its inclusion in the cult classic, The Big Lebowski, as The Dude’s favorite cocktail.

Lovingly portrayed by Jeff Bridges in only a manner he could have pulled off, The Dude sipped White Russians straight into Hollywood history, along the way making the drink a staple for any fans of the cult classic. Luckily for them, it’s an amazingly simple cocktail to put together and easily adaptable for the holidays.

The Festive White Russian, as I like to call it, substitutes egg nog mix for the cream. You’ll also need to swipe some candy canes from the kids or Christmas tree and smash them into little bits. Top the drink with some whipped cream and sprinkle it with the candy cane bits. Before you know it, you’ll be volunteering to play Santa or ringing a bell for the Salvation Army – even if you weren’t invited.

INGREDIENTS
•2 oz Kahlua
•1 oz Vodka
•Egg nog mix to taste
•Whipped cream
•Candy cane bits

DIRECTIONS
1 .Fill old fashioned glass two thirds full with ice and add Kahlua, vodka and egg nox mix (add egg nog mix last). Stir. For those of you who prefer your drinks shaken, not stirred, add the ingredients, along with ice, to a shaker and shake. Strain contents into an old fashioned glass filled with 2/3 ice.
2. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle candy cane bits/shards on top of whipped cream.
3. Add candy cane as a stirrer if you have an extra one laying around and the kiddos won’t miss it.
