Sandy Island, a tiny island off the coast of Anguilla, announced on its Facebook page this week that its restaurant is reopening Friday, April 6th, seven months to the day after Hurricane Irma hit. Literally wiped from the face of the planet by HIrma, Sandy Island, accessible by ferry from nearby Sandy Ground in Road Bay, Mother Nature has deposited enough sand in its previous location that the owners were able to reconstruct a restaurant to welcome back visitors.
Previously home to a few other structures besides the restaurant, the owners refer to the reopening of the restaurant as “phase 1 of the rebirth” in the announcement on their Facebook page:
“Sandy Island restaurant reopens Fri, April 6th exactly 7 months after hurricane Irma. Come and experience phase 1 of the rebirth and be a part of the transformation.”
A GoFundMe site has been established for those interested in helping Sandy Island rebuild.
