In news that can only be described as shocking, the ownes of beach bars on South Friars Bay in St. Kitts have been told that their leases will be terminated at the end of February, according to the website, The Manchineel. The website, normally devoted to satire, starts the article out plainly enough – “First – this is NOT SATIRE” and goes on to describe the accuracy of the report, the situation, what we can do as fans of this beach full of popular beach bars such as Shipwreck and Discovery and possible resolutions.
The article reports that “We’ve been told (not verified) that the Ritz Carlton has bought both South and North Friars” which makes me that much less a fan of the high end chain. The only beach bar to escape the eviction notice is Carambola.
I’ve tried reaching out to a couple of the owners of the beach bars on South Friars and will update this article once I’m able to verify further information.

I wish, Larry! Shipwreck just posted on their Facebook page that it is true.

Carambola is on an adjacent parcel of land with a different owner than the one issuing the eviction notices to the affected bars.

I love the natural beauty of St Kitts and would hate to see it become just another commercialized Island. The natural beauty is the reason why my husband and I return year after year. St Kitts don’t become a me too Aruba.
