Back in 2014, we went to Anguilla and St. Maarten for our annual Thanksgiving vacation. After much deliberation and research which included finding out how many beach bars were within walking distance of any potential accommodations, we chose the Royal Palm, located on Kim Sha Beach on Simpson Bay in St. Maarten. Seeing videos like this one, while they’re nice and lovely and all, only serve as a reminder of what I miss about that vacation and specifically that location. The fireball at Buccaneer Beach Bar is a must see and adds to the festive atmosphere lingering around after the sun disappears for the day. And those sunsets – my desire that I only stay at resorts that offer me daily sunsets was reaffirmed on this vacation as the sunsets that greeted us at the end of each day were a consistent reminder that there are moments that shouldn’t be missed no matter how many times you experience them.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in St. Maarten/St. Martin, I highly recommend the Royal Palm Resort. We booked our condo through VRBO and avoided the resort fees that get tacked on if you book through Expedia. That means you won’t get your towels and bedding changed each day but do you even do that at home? There are multiple choices for dining including the Buccaneer, Topper’s and the St. Maarten Yacht Club, where you can sit and watch as the bridge opens and the yachts come pouring into the bay – it ended up being our favorite place for dining.

Thanks for the tip about VRBO and Royal Palm Resort. I’ve never visited St. Martin or St. Maarten, but I hear that they are lovely. Simpson Bay is absolutely gorgeous (except for that dark expanse of rock/ reef – I have a phobia about dark “things” in the water).

You’re more than welcome, Danielle! Always glad to help out. If you want to know which condo owner we rented from, let me know and I can email you his info. And yeah, dark things can be scary but I think you’d really enjoy the beach at the Royal Palm. Cheers!
