With temperatures in my hometown scheduled to be in the mid 50s Christmas day (about 30 degrees higher than normal), the fact that I’m not celebrating my favorite holiday of the year on an island in the Caribbean becomes a little bit easier to bear. Still, it’s not Christmas in the Caribbean and while I love a white Christmas as much as anyone else, white sand would be a suitable substitute for the fluffy stuff.
While the multitude of rum-infused eggnog recipes that I wrote about yesterday will help virtually transport me to a beach bar far away, it will be the following tunes, hand selected by yours truly, that will have me swaying back and forth, with a gentle nudge from either the eggnog or the thought of palm trees and gently rolling waves. Either way, I’ll be swaying and I might even be on beat.
You can check out my Youtube channel for a playlist of these songs so you can enjoy all of them back to back.
tobyMac – “Christmas This Year”
Toby’s love for the islands is undeniable (his wife is Jamaican) and tinges of reggae are often found in his songs.
Boney M. – “Mary’s Boy Child/Oh My Lord”
My favorite version of this song.
Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters – “Mele Kalikimaka”
Bing singing Mele Kalikimaka – does it get anymore tropical Christmas than that?
Vybz Kartel – “Everyday Is Christmas”
You have to have someone on the list who actually calls the islands home, never mind the fact that it’s a prison in Jamaica for the rest of his life.
Colbie Caillat – “Christmas in the Sand”
I just love Colbie’s music so a song about Christmas and the sand was a no brainer.
Jose Feliciano – “Felize Navidad”
This might have been the easiest choice to make.
Jimmy Buffett – “Christmas in the Caribbean,” “Christmas Island” and “Mele Kalikimaka”
This list wouldn’t be complete without some Buffett songs – these three are my favorites.
Jack Johnson – “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”
I’m a passionate Jack Johnson fan. His music just screams “take me to the beach!”
Kenny Chesney – “All I Want For Christmas Is a Real Good Tan”
If I hadn’t included at least on Kenny song on this list, I may have had to resign as CEO of Good Times at Beach Bar Bums. Regardless, he earns his spot on this list.
Jason Mraz – “Winter Wonderland”
Mr. A to Z nails this song and it’s a perfect sunset closer during the holidays.
