Yahoo released a list earlier this month of their top 20 Caribbean beach bars and it’s a menagerie of beach bars that any Caribbean aficionado would have a hard time arguing with. A large part of that has to do with the fact that the author, Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon (aka JetSetSarah), is a bona fide Caribbean expert. Not that the other news sources putting out these “best of” lists don’t have Caribbean experts but I’d take her word over almost any other.
I’m happy to see a Tulum beach bar made the list. People often forget that the Caribbean actually does have a west side and there are some pretty cool beach bars outside of the West Indies. Tulum is an up and coming region full of yet to be discovered beach bars and it’s nice to see the area get some love.
Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/Maarten and St. Vincent and the Grenadines top the list with three beach bars from each of these countries making the list of best Caribbean beach bars.
There are some surprise omissions on the list such as the Sunshine Shack and Dune Preserve in Anguilla and the Shiggidy Shack, Shipwreck and Lion Rock in St. Kitts but when you’re covering an area as vast as the Caribbean that is famous for its beach bars, you’re not going to make everyone happy. And hey, if you don’t like it, come up with your own list, start handing darts out and watch them fly!
I’ve been to seven on this list. How many have you been to? Did any of your favorites miss out? Let me know in the comments and we can discuss it like civilized human beings … with darts holstered.
