In what turned out to be a process that took a little longer than expected, the newly redesigned beachbarbums.com officially went live last night! Featuring a “magazine” style template from Elegant Themes, the blog was moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and became self-hosted in order to offer more control of the website’s design and function and to give it a more up to date look.
Some of the improvements you’ll see is a more streamlined layout allowing you to more easily get to the information you want. Going to an island and want to find out what articles have been written on that location? Go to the “Categories” drop down window, scroll until you find your location and then click on it to see all of the related articles. The locations have been expanded to not only include specific islands (Tortola instead of just British Virgin Islands) but to also include beaches as well.
You might notice that the social media content is no longer included in a side bar. In an effort to keep the design “clean,” the content was removed and you can now access all of the related social media sites in one location on the main page as well as sign up for the RSS feed.
The Wallpapers page has undergone the most dramatic change. In the previous design, the preview images were rather large and just displayed in one long column. When you clicked on them they would open in a new page. Now the image previews are smaller, grouped into four columns and open via Lightbox, an application that allows you to display information (in this case images) without leaving the page. Once the image opens in the Lightbox app, you simply need to right click on it, save it to your computer and presto – your tropical inspiration awaits you.
There will be more improvements coming to the site in the future such as a forum, classifieds section and a newsletter sign up. In the meantime, if you have any recommendations on what you would like to see on the site, leave a comment on this article and let me know. I love hearing from others on how I could make the site a more useful one.
As a small “thank you” to everyone who visits this blog and all of our social media friends, a new beach bar wallpaper has been added to the Wallpapers page. It features Cathy’s Beach Bar, a beach bar/restaurant located on the Strip in St. Kitts. It is by far the best place for dinner on that stretch of beach and I highly recommend it if you’re on the island.
Cheers, all, and thanks for hanging out with me at my virtual beach bar and helping it get to this point. Next round’s on me!
