Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, a beach bar on White Bay in Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, nails it when it comes to beach bar nomenclature. After all, if a beach bar can’t be stress free, what’s the point? Known for its laid back vibe, shell covered walls and honor bar (hop behind the bar, mix your own drinks and leave an appropriate donation behind), Ivan Chinnery’s beach bar needs no superfluous hyperbole from me. If it’s good enough to be the setting for Kenny Chesney’s video “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem,” that’s the only public declaration of love any self-respecting beach bar bum requires.
Ivan’s also offers accommodations via a campsite, cabins and a guest house for those of you so inclined to live stress free for more than a day trip. On an island where living quarters for rent are hard to come by, having your bed a few stumbling steps away can be a blessing, especially after a day of serving yourself at the honor bar. “I paid for eight rum punches so I’m drinking eight rum punches!”
A special thanks to Noelle Campbell for being so kind as to provide the images for this article and consequently making me insanely jealous of her travels.

“Chatting with Ivan is like chatting with an old friend. Quiet and unassuming, he seems genuinely interested in those who wander through his doors looking for a cool libation and to check out the interesting structure lined with thousands of shells.”

About Ivan’s Stree Free Bar: “Welcome to Ivan’s little paradise, home of the famous stress free punch and also the stress free life style. Our little oasis will take you beyond your wildest dreams , with our friendly atmosphere and also our staff. The stress free zone was established on February of 1991 by JVD local Ivan Chinnery also known at that time as the “Bush Doctor”. We are located on the far eastern end of White Bay, in Jost Van Dyke, BVI. Nestled right on the bluff of the beach is our rustic little bar artistically decorated with seashells from near and far.
On the Western end of the bar you will see our kitchen and famous Thursday night Bar B Q pit and on the eastern side of the bar lies our camping community and also our camping supply store and gift shop.
Many of our customers come to get away from the hustle and bustle of their every day life by hangin out on the famous beach where Kenny Chesney’s “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem” video was filmed, enjoying the serene atmosphere at the campground or just hanging at the bar with Ivan himself.
So come and take a journey into his world. Relax and unwind, leave all your stress behind, with the fresh sea breeze, and beautiful beach, you’ll only have fun in paradise!!”
