Gertrude’s Beach Bar and Boutique on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands doesn’t get the attention some of her better known JVD brethren get, such as Ivan’s, Foxy’s and the Soggy Dollar, but make no mistake, the grand dame of Jost Van Dyke has assumed her rightful spot as “queen of the beach bars” (along with Jewel, of course) on this British isle and can stand sandy toe to sandy toe with any of her better known brothers.
The Tippling Tourist has this to say about Gertrude’s: “What Gertrude’s Place is, 100% Caribbean, a simple beach shelter with picnic tables, t shirts hanging from the ceiling left and signed buy the customers who have made homage here with lounge chairs out on the beach for sun worshippers to enjoy.”
The best thing about Gertrude’s Beach Bar? The “mix your own drink” policy. That’s right. You pay for the drink and then they hand you the ingredients and you make it yourself. All of a sudden, those vodka tonics I love almost as dearly as my dear daughter become vodkas with a splash of tonic. Don’t know how to make a Long Island or don’t want to muddle the mint for your mojito (really, who does?)? Have no fear – they’ll make it for you.
Photo provided free of charge by Noelle Campbell, who had the sense of mind to take pictures of Gertrude’s before imbibing in self mixed cocktails. Thanks, Noelle. We appreciate that! You can check out the rest of her photography on her Instagram profile and throw stuff at the screen as you realize she was cruising through the Caribbean while you were putting up with this endless winter.
